A Brains & Beauty Treatment Story

That tattoo doesn't have to define you. Let's fade it.

Q-switched laser tattoo reduction is a proven, affordable way to fade unwanted ink. You’ll see it called tattoo removal almost everywhere — we say reduction on purpose. Most tattoos fade dramatically over a series of sessions, but some ink and some colors leave a faint shadow, and we’d rather tell you that now than after six visits — and at Brains & Beauty, every treatment is performed by a licensed medical professional, with our Provider overseeing your care.

What if the ink you regret could finally fade,
one shockwave at a time?

— How It Works

One laser. A billionth of a second. Ink that shatters.

Tattoo ink is trapped deep in your skin, in particles far too big for your body to clear on its own. The Q-switched laser fires pulses in billionths of a second — not to burn the ink, but to create tiny shockwaves that shatter it into dust. Your immune system does the rest, flushing the fragments out naturally over the following weeks.

01

The Pulse

The Q-switched laser fires a pulse lasting about 10 nanoseconds — ten billionths of a second. It's so fast there's almost no heat, so the surrounding skin is left alone. ("Q" stands for "quality," the precision that makes this possible.)

02

The Shatter

The ink absorbs that burst of energy and instantly breaks apart — a photo-acoustic shockwave that fractures big ink particles into microscopic dust. This is what your body has been unable to do on its own.

03

The Cleanup

Over the next several weeks, your immune cells finally engulf the tiny fragments and carry them out through your lymphatic system. The tattoo fades a little more after every session — gradually and naturally.

— What It Treats

It's not just tattoos. It's a pigment specialist.

The same Q-switched laser is cleared to treat unwanted ink and a range of pigment problems — age spots, sun damage, and more. Choose what's on your mind.

— Know Your Skin

Find your skin type.

Your Fitzpatrick skin type is the single most important safety factor in laser tattoo reduction — it decides which wavelength we can safely use on you. Answer six quick questions for an estimate. (We always confirm it in person before treating.)

— Your Results, Mapped

Fading isn't instant. It's earned.

Tattoo reduction is a series, not a single visit — your body needs time to clear the ink between sessions. Tap through to see how it actually unfolds.

Right after
A frosty white flash, then calm.
Seconds after each pulse the tattoo turns white — "frosting" — as the energy releases. It fades within minutes, leaving the area red and slightly swollen, like a light sunburn.

— Your Visit

Quick in the chair. Honest about the rest.

Here's exactly what a Q-switch session at Brains & Beauty looks like. No surprises, no sugar-coating.

Prep

Cleanse, shave & prep

We photograph the tattoo and shave the area. Numbing is your choice — some clients use a topical numbing cream (it needs time to set in), others skip it and go right ahead. We'll walk you through the options first.

A few minutes

The laser

The actual treatment is quick — often just a few minutes, with larger pieces taking a little longer. Most people compare each pulse to a hot rubber-band snap. Everyone in the room wears protective eyewear.

After

Ointment & aftercare

We apply a healing ointment and a non-stick bandage. Icing is available if you'd like it, though most clients don't need it. You'll leave with written aftercare and a direct line to us if anything looks off in the days after.

— Honest Recovery

Expect redness, swelling, and sometimes blisters or scabs for the first several days — all normal signs of healing. Keep it covered and moisturized for about 5–6 days, stay out of pools and baths until it's healed, and never pick at it. Then it's a 6–8 week wait while your body clears the ink before the next round.

— The B&B Difference

A clinician, not a tattoo-shop back room.

Laser tattoo reduction puts real energy into your skin — done wrong, it scars. Every session here is performed by a licensed clinician, under medical oversight. That's not a marketing line. It's the difference between fading a tattoo safely and damaging your skin.

Honest expectations

We'll tell you how many sessions your specific tattoo likely needs — and if a color won't fully clear, we say so up front.

— Honest Answers

What people actually ask us.

No marketing-speak. The real questions, with the real answers, from people considering tattoo reduction.

Does it hurt? +
It's more intense than getting the tattoo, but it's quick. Most people describe each pulse as a hot rubber-band snap against the skin. Numbing cream is available if you'd like it — some clients use it, some don't — and the laser portion itself is usually just a few minutes.
How many sessions will I need? +
Most tattoos take somewhere between 6 and 10 sessions, but it genuinely depends on three things: the age of the tattoo (older fades faster), the colors (black is easiest), and how densely the ink was packed. At your consult we use a clinical scoring scale to give you a realistic, honest estimate — not a guess to get you in the door.
Why do I have to wait so long between sessions? +
Because the laser doesn't clear the ink on its own — your body does. After we shatter the ink into fragments, your immune system needs about 6–8 weeks to clear them out through your lymphatic system. Treating too soon doesn't speed things up; it just irritates skin that's still healing. Patience here protects your results.
Will it be completely gone? +
We call this tattoo reduction, not removal, for a reason — no laser can promise a tattoo will vanish 100%. That said, most tattoos fade dramatically, many to the point you'd have to know where to look. Black and dark blue reduce best; some colors (especially yellows and light greens) are stubborn and may only lighten. We'll always tell you what's realistic for your specific ink before we start.
Is it safe for darker skin tones? +
Yes — with the right wavelength. Our 1064nm wavelength is safe for all skin tones because it passes through melanin and targets ink. The 532nm wavelength (used for reds and some pigment work) is only safe for fair skin, because melanin absorbs it too strongly. We screen your Fitzpatrick skin type carefully and never use a wavelength that could burn or discolor your skin.
What does recovery actually look like? +
Right after, the area turns white briefly ("frosting"), then red and swollen like a sunburn. Over the next few days you may see blisters or scabs — all normal. Keep it covered and moisturized for about 5–6 days, stay out of pools, baths, and direct sun until it's healed, and don't pick at it. Most people are back to normal within a couple of weeks.
Wait — what exactly is a "Q-switched laser"? Is that safe? +
Fair question. "Q-switched" just describes how the laser releases its energy. Think of it like a slingshot: the device builds energy up and then releases it all at once in an incredibly short burst — about ten billionths of a second. ("Q" stands for "quality.")

That speed is the whole point. Because the pulse is so fast, it shatters the ink mechanically — with a tiny shockwave — instead of burning it with sustained heat. That means far less damage to the skin around the ink, and a cleaner, safer heal. It's been a proven, widely used tattoo-reduction technology for decades. Newer picosecond ("pico") lasers can sometimes clear ink in fewer sessions, but they cost significantly more per visit — Q-switched lasers deliver reliable fading at a price that keeps a full series realistic.
Are there side effects? +
The common ones are temporary: blistering, swelling, pinpoint bleeding, redness, brief darkening of the area, and occasional bruising — these usually settle within a couple of weeks. Less commonly, skin can lighten or darken temporarily. Following your aftercare and sun protection closely is the single best way to keep your skin happy and your results clean.
Can you reduce colored ink or cosmetic tattoos? +
Colored ink — yes, with realistic expectations: reds, oranges, and purples often respond well, while yellows and light greens are tougher. Cosmetic tattoos (permanent makeup, microbladed brows) need extra caution, because certain pigments can darken or change color when lasered. We always test a small spot first and talk you through it before treating.
Who shouldn't get this treatment? +
We won't treat a tattoo less than 12 weeks (about 3 months) old, anyone pregnant or nursing, anyone who's had gold-based therapy, or skin that's recently tanned, sunburned, or actively infected. We screen carefully at your consult — and if you're not a candidate yet, we'll tell you exactly when you will be.
