Every hair is anchored in a follicle, and dark hair is loaded with melanin — the same pigment that gives it color. The 810nm diode fires a single, focused wavelength that melanin absorbs better than the surrounding skin. That light becomes heat, the heat travels down the pigmented shaft to the root, and it damages the follicle's growth engine — the bulb, the stem cells, and the blood supply feeding it. Think of a black shirt on a hot day soaking up the sun: the pigment is what catches the energy. Meanwhile a sapphire tip chills the surface before, during, and after each pulse, so the heat goes where we want it and your skin stays protected.

The Target

The diode fires pulses at 810nm — a wavelength melanin soaks up far more readily than the skin around it. In a dark hair, that pigment sits richest right in the bulb, deep in the follicle. The cooled sapphire tip protects the surface so the energy is free to travel where the pigment is, not where it isn't.

The Heat

The absorbed light becomes heat, and that heat conducts down the pigmented shaft into the root — the bulb, the stem cells, and the tiny blood vessels feeding the follicle. Enough controlled heat there injures the structure that builds new hair. That's the whole game: cook the engine, not the skin.

The Shed

Over the next one to three weeks the treated hairs work their way out — it can look like new growth, but it's the dead shafts being pushed free. Hair that does come back is finer and lighter. The catch: a laser pulse only catches follicles in their active growth phase, which is why a single session can't get them all.

If there's no pigment, there's nothing for the laser to hit.

This is the single most important thing to understand before you book, and most ads won't say it plainly: the laser finds hair by its pigment. The darker and coarser the hair, the better the result. The lighter the hair, the less there is to absorb the energy — and on truly pigment-free hair, it simply won't work. We'd rather tell you that now than take your money for sessions that can't deliver.

That's the 810's real strength: a longer wavelength reaches the follicle without dumping heat into the surface, and aggressive cooling protects the epidermis, so we can safely treat every Fitzpatrick type, I through VI. On darker skin we lower the energy, lengthen the pulse, run Standard mode, and test a small spot 48 hours ahead. And no matter your tone, a fresh tan is a hard stop — tanned skin has extra pigment competing for the light, so we wait until it fades.

The all-skin-types workhorse

Standard delivers higher energy in a longer, more deliberate pulse, placed area by area. It's the only mode we use on tanned or darker skin — for Fitzpatrick V and VI we run it at one pulse per second with a "chill–pop–chill" rhythm that lets the cooling catch up between shots. Slower, but it reaches every skin tone safely, which is the entire point.

Fast mode uses lower energy at up to ten pulses per second, so we glide the handpiece in a smooth, continuous motion — generally more comfortable than Standard, and quick over large areas. It's excellent for debulking dense, coarse hair early in a series. The limits are firm: skin types I through IV only, and never on tanned skin.

Here's what sets the 810 apart: because its longer wavelength reaches the follicle without scorching the surface — and because the sapphire tip cools hard — we can treat the full Fitzpatrick range, types I through VI. But "can treat" isn't "treat the same." Your skin tone doesn't decide whether you're a candidate; it decides how carefully we work. Lighter skin can use Fast mode and higher energy with a wide safety margin. Darker skin is a different conversation: more pigment in the skin competes for the light, so the real risks — burns, blistering, and temporary darkening or lightening of the skin — are higher. That's why types IV–VI get Standard mode only, lower energy, a longer pulse, maximum cooling, and a mandatory 48-hour test spot before we treat the full area. Shave, and skip the tan

Shave the area 12–24 hours before — close, with no visible hair above the skin, because we want the energy going into the follicle, not burning surface hair. Do not wax, thread, or tweeze for two to four weeks beforehand; those pull out the very target we're aiming at. Stay out of the sun and off sunless tanner for about four weeks, and come in with clean skin — no makeup, lotion, or deodorant on the area.

Cool gel, the right settings, one area at a time

Everyone in the room wears 810nm-rated eyewear. We apply a thin layer of gel for glide and protection, confirm your settings, and — for darker skin — read a test spot first. Then we work in small cross-hatched quadrants, either gliding in Fast mode or stamping in Standard, with the sapphire tip cooling before, during, and after every pulse. How much you feel depends heavily on the area — thicker-skinned spots like the legs and back are an easy warm snap, while sensitive areas like the upper lip, bikini, and areola can genuinely sting. We pace to your comfort and take breaks whenever you need, and optional numbing is available for the tender areas — just ask ahead so it has time to work.

No downtime, clear aftercare instructions

We soothe and cool the area, and you go. For a day or two, skip the gym, hot showers, hot tubs, and saunas, and don't pick or scratch. Wear SPF. Keep shaving between sessions if you like — it's the one method that leaves the follicle intact. Never wax, tweeze, thread, or pluck during your series, since those pull out the very target the laser needs, and skip depilatory creams too — they don't remove the root, but they can irritate and sensitize the skin before a session. Plan on a minimum of six sessions — often six to twelve — spaced about four to six weeks apart on the face and six to eight weeks on the body, because we can only treat the fraction of follicles in their active growth phase each time. "Permanent reduction" is the honest term, not "permanent removal": expect most hair gone for good and what returns to be finer and lighter, but hormones still drive hair growth, so conditions like PCOS and the natural changes of aging can wake new follicles down the line and call for occasional maintenance. Do the full series, keep your spacing, and stay off the sun and the wax — that consistency is what separates a great result from a disappointing one.

Does it hurt? +
Honestly, it depends a lot on the area — and we won't pretend otherwise. On thicker-skinned spots like the legs, back, and arms, most people feel a warm rubber-band snap that's very manageable, with the cooled sapphire tip taking the edge off before, during, and after each pulse. But sensitive areas are a different story: the upper lip, underarms, bikini and Brazilian, and especially the areola can genuinely sting. Coarse, dense hair and your first couple of sessions tend to hurt the most, and it eases noticeably as the hair thins. We offer optional topical numbing for the tender areas — but here's the honest caveat: numbing cream works on the skin surface, while the laser's heat is generated deeper, down at the follicle, so it takes the edge off rather than making it painless. Cooling runs the whole time, we pace to you and take breaks whenever you need, and there's no lingering pain afterward — at most a warm, slightly pink feeling for a few hours.
Is it actually permanent? +
The honest answer is "permanent reduction," not "permanent removal." After a full series, most of the treated hair is gone for good, and what does return tends to be finer, lighter, and sparser. But hormones drive hair growth, so changes like PCOS, pregnancy, and aging can wake up new follicles over time — which is why some people come back for occasional maintenance sessions. Anyone promising you 100% permanent removal forever isn't being straight with you.
How many sessions will I really need? +
Plan on a minimum of six, and often six to twelve, spaced about four to six weeks apart on the face and six to eight weeks on the body. The reason isn't upselling — it's biology. At any moment only a fraction of your follicles are in the active growth phase the laser can disable; the rest are resting and invisible to it. Each session catches a new wave as it cycles into growth. Skipping sessions or stretching the spacing too far is the most common reason people feel let down, so consistency matters.
Will it work on my blonde / red / gray hair? +
No — and we won't take your money pretending otherwise. The laser finds hair by its melanin (pigment). Blonde, red, gray, and white hair have little to none, so there's nothing for an 810 to absorb and no heat to disable the follicle. Light brown hair gives a weak, unpredictable response. If your hair is in this range, the honest recommendation is electrolysis, which works regardless of color. We'd rather send you to the right treatment than sell you the wrong one.
Can I be treated with darker skin? +
Yes — this is exactly where the 810 diode earns its "gold standard" name. Its longer wavelength reaches the follicle without scorching the surface, and the aggressive cooling protects your skin, so we can safely treat all Fitzpatrick types, I through VI. For darker skin we use Standard mode only, lower the energy, lengthen the pulse, cool hard, and run a test spot 48 hours ahead. Older or cheaper lasers genuinely aren't safe on dark skin; a properly run 810 is. The one universal rule is no tanning — extra pigment in tanned skin competes for the light.
Is there any downtime? +
Essentially none — this is one of the big advantages over resurfacing treatments. You may have slight redness and a warm, tingly feeling for a few hours, sometimes a touch of small bumps around the follicles, but you can return to normal life right away and wear makeup or deodorant the same day. We just ask you to skip the gym, hot showers, hot tubs, and saunas for a day or two, avoid picking or scratching, and wear SPF.
What do I do before and after? +
Before: shave the area 12–24 hours ahead, and do not wax, thread, or tweeze for two to four weeks — those remove the follicle the laser needs to target. Stay out of the sun and off self-tanner for about four weeks, and come with clean skin, no makeup, lotion, or deodorant on the area. After: SPF daily, stick to shaving only between sessions — no waxing, tweezing, threading, or creams — and skip heat and sweat (gym, hot tubs, saunas, hot showers) for a day or two. Treated hairs shed over one to three weeks — that "regrowth" is actually the dead shafts working their way out, so let them.
Are there side effects? +
The expected ones are mild and brief: redness, warmth, and slight swelling around the follicles for a few hours, sometimes small bumps. Adverse effects are uncommon but can include discomfort, temporary changes in skin texture, blistering, or temporary darkening or lightening of the skin — more of a risk on darker tones, which is exactly why we test, cool hard, and treat conservatively. Following your aftercare instructions and staying out of the sun is the single biggest factor in a clean result.
Who shouldn't get laser hair reduction? +
We won't treat anyone who's pregnant or nursing, recently tanned or sun-exposed, or on Accutane within the past six months. We screen out active infections or cold sores in the area, recent retinol or hydroquinone use on the site, blood thinners or NSAIDs in the past few days, a history of skin cancer, uncontrolled diabetes, immune disorders, and recent cancer treatment, and we won't treat over a tattoo, on mucosal areas, or within the eye's orbital rim. People with PCOS or other hormonal conditions can absolutely be treated — they just need to understand it's longer-term management. We screen all of this at your consult and, if you're not a candidate, tell you exactly why and what your options are.
