Lines like the 11s, forehead creases, and crow's feet are caused by muscles contracting under the skin over and over again. Botulinum toxin doesn't fill, freeze, or paralyze permanently — it temporarily blocks the chemical message the nerve sends to the muscle, so the muscle takes a break, and the skin above it smooths out.
Every time you frown, squint, or raise your brows, your nerves shoot acetylcholine — a chemical messenger — across to the muscle, telling it to contract. Decades of those contractions etch lines into the skin above.
Botulinum toxin works at the nerve ending itself. It cleaves a protein called SNAP-25, which is what loads acetylcholine into the synapse. No SNAP-25, no message. No message, no contraction.

A note on FDA status. Botulinum toxin is FDA-approved for three upper-face areas — frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet — and only BOTOX® carries all three; the other brands are approved for frown lines. The remaining areas below are well-established, widely performed off-label uses, meaning they are not part of the product’s FDA labeling even though the technique is standard in aesthetic practice. Off-label does not mean unapproved or unsafe — it means the manufacturer did not seek approval for that specific use. We’ll tell you which is which at your consult.
